Inclusion and Exclusion

Given our premise that there is one Being, of whom we are all expressions, it is logical to assume that somewhere in our depths we are conscious of this fact. There must certainly be an infinite number of levels of communal resonance developed down through the eons to where our particular attention is focused right now. I think, therefore, that in our interactions with other people we are at least subtly aware of being included in those deeper communal spaces, or excluded from them, implicitly or explicitly. Our sensitivity to that inclusion or exclusion will likely be experienced energetically as undifferentiated resonance or dissonance. At deeper levels, its impact would be much more subtle, and at some depth disappear into ranges where the wavelengths are too broad for most to perceive given where our attention is currently focused. Yet they are still there.

When my way of expressing myself leads to being understood, there is some measure of being emptied of that communication, and in the removal of that set of frequencies, I experience a more subtle underlying flow. In that shift from a faster set of frequencies to slower, the experience that is presenced is one of relative stillness. Think of pedaling a bike up a hill as high frequency and coasting down the other side as low. There is relative peace and we clearly resonate – feel “at home” in – that expanse, that peacefulness.

The relative depth of a given conversation, my attachment to a particular perspective, my state of openness or vulnerability at a moment in time will, at least in part, determine the level of connection or disconnection that I “feel”.

The question for me then becomes, how much of another person’s self-expression can I include? Can I peer deeply enough behind any communication that evokes perceived dissonance in me, and tune farther into their depths where I can see the point at which I and they are related in resonance. Can I completely allow the frequency that is being shared to pass through me unimpeded? The allowing of a flow, my absorption of what was expressed, leaves them with an emptiness that resonates with those deeper communal spaces.

Now part of the paradox of being here is that in order to be able to assess what would make my personal environment more perfect, I have to have a unique, thus separate, perspective. So that which allows me, as an aspect of Becoming, to assess and creatively choose from a particular perspective, also at some level separates my awareness from the inclusive nature of Being. In other words, in order to participate in creation, a distinct “I” must separate itself, despite the fact that it also wants to experience being included/belonging, its fundamental state. I think that, on many levels, aspects of our awareness are always attentive not only to whether we are being included or excluded, but also whether to include or exclude others.

So, I will simply note that fundamental aspects of Being and Becoming appear to be mutually exclusive. In this particular interplay, in order to experience one, at some level you have to give up the other, at least momentarily. Waveforms move in one direction and then the other, up and then down; there will tend to be some experience of dissonance in the inevitable change of direction at all levels.
